The islands of Cape Verde, often spelled Cabo Verde, are located in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa. This beautiful archipelago is made up of ten volcanic islands and is well known for its warm year-round climate, golden beaches and relaxed island atmosphere. Over the past decade Cape Verde has become an increasingly popular holiday destination for travellers looking for sunshine, scenic coastlines and a mix of African and Portuguese culture. The islands offer a peaceful setting for relaxation as well as plenty of opportunities for exploring nature and local traditions.

Cape Verde is famous for its beautiful beaches, many of which stretch for miles with soft golden sand and clear blue water. The island of Sal is one of the most popular destinations, particularly around the resort town of Santa Maria. The beaches here are wide and ideal for swimming, sunbathing and water sports. Another popular island is Boa Vista, known for its long unspoiled beaches and peaceful atmosphere. Many visitors enjoy simply relaxing beside the ocean while watching the Atlantic waves roll onto the shore.

One of the main reasons people visit Cape Verde is the consistently warm weather. The islands enjoy a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year and very little rainfall. January is one of the cooler months, but daytime temperatures are still usually around 23°C to 25°C, which is ideal for escaping the colder winter weather in Europe. February is very similar, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures typically around 24°C. In March the weather becomes slightly warmer and remains dry, with temperatures often reaching around 25°C to 26°C.

April continues the pattern of warm sunny days with temperatures around 25°C to 27°C. This is a pleasant time to explore the islands, relax on the beaches or take boat trips along the coast. May is slightly warmer, with temperatures usually between 26°C and 28°C. By June the weather becomes hotter, with daytime temperatures around 27°C to 29°C and cooling sea breezes that make the climate comfortable.

July and August are warm and sunny, with temperatures often reaching 28°C to 30°C. These months can sometimes bring short tropical showers, although rainfall is usually brief and sunshine quickly returns. September is often the warmest month, with temperatures around 29°C to 31°C and warm ocean waters perfect for swimming. October remains warm and pleasant with temperatures around 28°C to 30°C, and the occasional brief rain shower may still occur. November sees the weather become slightly cooler and drier again, with temperatures around 26°C to 28°C. December continues this comfortable climate, with warm sunshine and temperatures around 25°C to 27°C, making it a popular destination for winter sun holidays.

In addition to relaxing on the beach, there are plenty of things to see and do across the islands. Water sports are very popular, particularly windsurfing and kitesurfing, thanks to the steady Atlantic breezes. Boat trips, snorkelling and diving are also popular activities, allowing visitors to explore the rich marine life around the islands. Nature lovers may enjoy visiting volcanic landscapes and desert-like sand dunes that give parts of Cape Verde a dramatic and unique appearance.

Travellers looking to experience local culture can explore colourful towns and traditional villages where music and food play an important role in daily life. Cape Verde is known for its vibrant music scene, including the traditional style called morna. Local markets, small cafés and seaside restaurants provide the perfect opportunity to experience the island’s relaxed lifestyle and welcoming atmosphere.

Food in Cape Verde reflects the country’s mix of African and Portuguese influences. Fresh seafood is widely available, including tuna, lobster and grilled fish served with rice, vegetables or local spices. One of the most traditional dishes is cachupa, a slow-cooked stew made with corn, beans, vegetables and meat or fish. Many restaurants along the coast allow visitors to enjoy fresh meals while overlooking the ocean.

With its year-round sunshine, long sandy beaches and laid-back island culture, Cape Verde has become a favourite destination for travellers seeking warmth and relaxation. Whether visitors want to unwind beside the sea, explore volcanic landscapes or experience local music and cuisine, the islands offer a unique and memorable holiday experience in the Atlantic Ocean.
